A Sense of Direction was a public art project, part of the Art Plus Development Award scheme in 2005-6.

The project began in May 2005 as a proposal to develop a Sensory Trail for blind and visually impaired people as part of the Art Plus Awards Scheme.* The development period included research and consultation with people suffering from visual impairment in collaboration with Eastbourne Blind Society and the RNIB. Activities included a seafront walk and a tactile workshop with groups of blind and visually impaired people in Eastbourne, as well as a series of research visits to blind organisations.

The red windmill, a device used as a sensory marker on the seafront walk, became an icon used throughout the project.

* Art Plus was a competitive award scheme led by Arts Council England, South East and the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA).
